Know your Students Part 1

Are my students seeing what I think they’re seeing?

A recent discussion with my students was quite eye-opening.  We were talking about how students navigate through the Canvas classroom and I was shocked to find out how they typically navigate through class.

Students are navigating Canvas in three ways:

  1. Using the to-do list
  2. Scrolling through the modules
  3. Going straight to the assignments section and working through what’s there.

Why does this matter?

Based on how your build the Canvas component of your class, students may or may not be seeing all of the materials you expect them to see.

What can I do about it?

course links Add content in a way that’ll be visible to all three types of navigation.
Link supportive files and pages directly within the assignment directions.  To do this, click the link icon and select ‘Course Links’. The default view lets you link to pages, assignments, quizzes, and such.  You can also change from the link view to a file view that’ll let you link to files you’ve uploaded to the course.
