Faculty Grants: $1000 for adopting open textbooks

Every semester, I see our students struggle with purchasing textbooks. We have been trying to help by having texts available on reserve in the library (send us desk copies if you have spare!), but a new state initiative is a more sustainable solution.  NC LIVE, North Carolina’s library cooperative, is launching a statewide initiative called Open Education North Carolina (OENC) to curate free, open textbooks for the most-frequently taught courses at North Carolina’s colleges and universities. This initiative could make a HUGE difference by providing quality free textbooks for your classes. As an incentive, NC Live is offering a $1000 grant (read: $$ in your pocket!) to faculty who adopt an open textbook.

This fall, NC LIVE will be providing open textbook workshops to interested faculty across the state. The workshops will provide interested faculty and librarians with an overview of both open educational resources in general and the OENC initiative in particular, including information about adoption grants, copyright, and student success. Workshops will occur in the Mountain and Nantahala regions of the state at the following times:

Tuesday, October 2, 2018  |  Asheville
Sherrill Center, UNC-Asheville

Monday, November 12, 2018  |  Cullowhee
Curriculum Materials Center, Western Carolina University

Note that these workshops are open to faculty/instructors from all colleges, community colleges, and universities--Not just those of the host institution. Librarian workshops will take place in the morning (10:00am-12:00pm), and faculty/instructor workshops will take place in the afternoon (1:00pm-2:30pm). Read more about the workshops and register at www.nclive.org/oenc/workshops.

Good news! I just learned that Sarah Maveety has been selected for one of these grants. If you are interested, be sure to get your grant application in early.
